RAI – Technical Communication Center, Rome Grottarossa
1990
Grottarossa, Rome, Italy
The RAI Technical Communication Center in Grottarossa was developed in preparation for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.
The project required the deployment of advanced technical infrastructure to support broadcasting, ensuring global transmission of images, news, and commentary. It also marked a strategic step for RAI in reorganizing and modernizing its facilities.
A major organizational effort enabled the completion of buildings, technological systems, and infrastructure within just 18 months. Prefabrication played a key role, influencing design choices, construction techniques, and execution speed.
All structural elements were prefabricated off-site, except for the building end sections, which were cast in place and assembled dry on site. Construction began on August 1, 1988, and the first phase was completed by spring 1989. Structural design and supervision were led by Eng. Sergio Tremi Proietti.
